Chicone Village Day April 25 2026

In 1665, Englishman Thomas Taylor was given a land grant of 700 acres located directly upon the Chicacoan village on the Nanticoke River.  He called the property "Handsell,", which in the 17th c. English means" earnest money", or the " first money handed at market". 

There he established a trading post with the people of Chicacoan and learned the Algonquin language. He served as a designated interpreter for the villagers there.
